“The Army’s New Handgun: A Weapon for Criminals?

There’s a new semi-automatic handgun on the horizon for the Army that U.S. consumers may have access to almost immediately. When that happens, America’s emergency rooms better be prepared for the carnage that’s likely to follow (Carnage? Guns kill people? I thought it was people—using guns, knives, cars, baseball bats, their hands, and a whole lot of other things—kill other people!—my addition).
Today, during a so-called ‘industry day,’ the U.S. Army is briefing arms manufacturers on its requirements for a new handgun, The Atlantic reported yesterday. ‘Several gun makers will compete for the lucrative contract (So, the new, more lethal gun isn’t even designed yet let alone produced!—my addition).’

The goal is to develop something far more advanced and powerful than the Cold-War era Beretta M9, which the Army has been using for nearly three decades (A new gun design after 30 years! That does not seem unreasonable! The military should have the best weapons available! They are fighting for their lives and for OURS! I personally want the enemy dead and our military personnel alive to fight another day!—my addition). Since the Army is ‘the lead agent for small arms,’ whatever weapon is produced would also have to meet ‘the needs of the other services,’ reports Military.com (Cost efficient! Seems reasonable!—my addition).
‘Advancements in firearms have taken place since the M9 was adopted nearly 30 years ago, and it is our intent to take advantage of these advancements (Good! I should hope so!—my addition),’ a military spokesperson told FoxNews.com on Friday. ‘The Army is seeking to replace the M9 and M11 pistols with a handgun that is more accurate, ergonomic, reliable and durable than the current pistol (All good things!—my addition).’
At issue, though, is that ‘the last time the military challenged the industry to make a better handgun, all the innovations intended for the battlefield also ended up in the consumer market, and the severity (Severity? What is more severe than being dead?—my addition) of civilian shootings soared,’ writes Matt Valentine in The Atlantic. He explains:
Studying gunshot injuries in the D.C. area in the 1980s, Daniel Webster of Johns Hopkins University noticed an alarming trend—as time went on, more and more patients were arriving at the emergency room with multiple bullet wounds (So? If I’m trying to stop someone from doing me or others harm, I’m going to keep shooting as long as he is standing and has a weapon!—my addition). In 1983, at the beginning of the study period, only about a quarter of gunshot patients had multiple injuries, but in the last two years of the study, that proportion had risen to 43 percent (So? Is the type of gun used the ONLY variable? And if it is, so what? Again, I’m shooting until he is down AND unarmed!—my addition).
Over the same period, semiautomatic pistols with a capacity of 15-rounds (or more) were replacing six-shot revolvers as the most popular firearms in the country. It’s not difficult to see the correlation—more bullets in the guns, more bullets in the victims (Good! It doesn’t make any difference if it is one bullet or six bullets if one is dead! If it takes six to put him down, six it is and I have more to protect myself and others if there are more bad guys around! The more bullets available without reloading the better! Does one bullet always stop a criminal? No! Are there always only one criminal on the scene? NO! Is this writer anti-guns, anti-protection or what? Right now, ‘the consumer market for guns is slowing down after years of rapid growth,’ Maksim Soshkin, a defense industry analyst with IBISWorld, told The Fiscal Times. (Could that be because the demand for guns has now peaked! Everyone who wanted a gun to provide protection purchased the guns wanted. I know a number of women who bought guns for the first time! I do not blame them. I decided a long time ago not to own a gun. After the election of a radical socialist, I gave purchasing a gun very serious consideration! May still do so although it is unlikely. I would never rule it out in all circumstances though!—my addition) In recent years, ‘fears over more stringent gun regulations caused many consumers to go out and purchase guns (That was not the major fear!—my addition), which they thought would be banned. Between 2008 and 2013, the FBI’s NICS [National Instant Criminal Background Check System] for gun purchases increased at an annualized 10.7 percent (Is that all?—my addition).’
As the dust settled and consumers realized ‘no nationwide regulation would be passed anytime soon (Not from want of trying to confiscate our guns contrary to the Second Amendment!—my addition), demand has begun to fall off,’ said Soshkin. In the first half of this year, NICS checks decreased 5.2 percent as compared to the same time period in 2013 (The demand has been fulfilled! It would be almost impossible to keep a high increase in growth going over time! A gun is not replaced every year!—my addition), he said.
‘A lot of the recent rise in gun sales can be attributed to gun enthusiasts—many of whom actually own multiple firearms—with overall gun ownership actually dropping (Just threw in another variable! No doubt, there are others as well!—my addition).’”
In my opinion, a well armed citizenry is a necessity for a free State! That is why the Second Amendment was placed into the Constitution! And that is also why the Obama Administration would like nothing better than to disarm us!
