This time of the year, whether in good economic times or bad, is when Americans gather with their families and friends and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together. It marks a remembrance of those early Pilgrim Fathers who crossed the uncharted ocean from Europe to make a new start in Plymouth, Massachusetts. What is less appreciated is that Thanksgiving also is a celebration of the birth of free enterprise in America.

The English Puritans, who left Great Britain and sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower in 1620, were not only escaping from religious persecution in their homeland. They also wanted to turn their back on what they viewed as the materialistic and greedy corruption of the Old World.

In the New World, they wanted to erect a New Jerusalem that would not only be religiously devout, but be built on a new foundation of communal sharing and social altruism. Their goal was the communism of Plato’s Republic, in which all would work and share in common, knowing neither private property nor self-interested acquisitiveness.

What resulted is recorded in the diary of Governor William Bradford, the head of the colony. The colonists collectively cleared and worked land, but they brought forth neither the bountiful harvest they hoped for, nor did it create a spirit of shared and cheerful brotherhood.

The less industrious members of the colony came late to their work in the fields, and were slow and easy in their labors. Knowing that they and their families were to receive an equal share of whatever the group produced, they saw little reason to be more diligent in their efforts. The harder working among the colonists became resentful that their efforts would be redistributed to the more malingering members of the colony. Soon they, too, were coming late to work and were less energetic in the fields.

As Governor Bradford explained in his old English (though with the spelling modernized):

‘For the young men that were able and fit for labor and service did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children, without recompense. The strong, or men of parts, had no more division of food, clothes, etc. then he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labor, and food, clothes, etc. with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignant and disrespect unto them. And for men’s wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc. they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could husbands brook it.’

Because of the disincentives and resentments that spread among the population, crops were sparse and the rationed equal shares from the collective harvest were not enough to ward off starvation and death. Two years of communism in practice had left alive only a fraction of the original number of the Plymouth colonists.

Realizing that another season like those that had just passed would mean the extinction of the entire community, the elders of the colony decided to try something radically different: the introduction of private property rights and the right of the individual families to keep the fruits of their own labor.

As Governor Bradford put it:

‘And so assigned to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number for that end . . . This had a very good success; for it made all hands very industrious, so as much more corn was planted then otherwise would have been by any means the Governor or any other could use, and saved him a great deal of trouble, and gave far better content. The women now went willingly into the field, and took their little-ones with them to set corn, which before would a ledge weakness, and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.’

The Plymouth Colony experienced a great bounty of food. Private ownership meant that there was now a close link between work and reward. Industry became the order of the day as the men and women in each family went to the fields on their separate private farms. When the harvest time came, not only did many families produce enough for their own needs, but they had surpluses that they could freely exchange with their neighbors for mutual benefit and improvement (Free enterprise in action! Work for yourself and it benefits everyone!—my addition).

In Governor Bradford’s words:

‘By this time harvest was come, and instead of famine, now God gave them plenty, and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God. And the effect of their planting was well seen, for all had, one way or other, pretty well to bring the year about, and some of the abler sort and more industrious had to spare, and sell to others, so as any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day.’

Hard experience had taught the Plymouth colonists the fallacy and error in the ideas that since the time of the ancient Greeks had promised paradise through collectivism rather than individualism (The lazy benefit under socialize for being lazy. Under free enterprise they are penalized! Socialism rewards bad behavior! Free enterprise rewards good behavior!—my addition). As Governor Bradford expressed it:

‘The experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years, and that amongst the Godly and sober men, may well convince of the vanity and conceit of Plato’s and other ancients;—that the taking away of property, and bringing into a common wealth, would make them happy and flourishing; as if they were wiser than God. For this community (so far as it was) was found to breed confusion and discontent, and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort.’

Was this realization that communism was incompatible with human nature and the prosperity of humanity to be despaired or be a cause for guilt (My use of red—my addition)? Not in Governor Bradford’s eyes. It was simply a matter of accepting that altruism and collectivism were inconsistent with the nature of man, and that human institutions should reflect the reality of man’s nature if he is to prosper. Said Governor Bradford:

‘Let none object this is man’s corruption, and nothing to the curse itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in his wisdom saw another course fitter for them.’

The desire to ‘spread the wealth’ and for government to plan and regulate people’s lives is as old as the utopian fantasy in Plato’s Republic. The Pilgrim Fathers tried and soon realized its bankruptcy and failure as a way for men to live together in society.

They, instead, accepted man as he is: hardworking, productive, and innovative when allowed the liberty to follow his own interests in improving his own circumstances and that of his family. And even more, out of his industry result the quantities of useful goods that enable men to trade to their mutual benefit.

In the wilderness of the New World, the Plymouth Pilgrims had progressed from the false dream of communism to the sound realism of capitalism. At a time of economic uncertainty, it is worthwhile recalling this beginning of the American experiment and experience with freedom.

This is the lesson of the First Thanksgiving. This year, when we, Americans sit around our dining table with family and friends, we should also remember that what we are really celebrating is the birth of free men and free enterprise in that New World of America (My use of red—my addition).

The true meaning of Thanksgiving, in other words, is the triumph of Capitalism over the failure of Collectivism in all its forms (My use of red—my addition).

Wealth in the Senate: This is a couple of years old but it is the latest information I could fine with a quick search. Notice the top seven are all Democrats—the supposed Party of the poor and underprivileged! John Kerry is now Secretary of State. Herb Kohl is no longer in the Senate. Frank Lautenberg recently died, has been replaced, and his widow was given $174,000 by Congress using a provision in a law just passed. Of course, all seven, as Democrats, are pro-MURDER in their voting records although back home they may claim otherwise!

Cemetery Watchman

My friend Kevin and I are volunteers at a national cemetery in Oklahoma and put in a few days a month in a ‘slightly larger’ uniform (Meaning they are ex-military and have put on weight since their days in the military—my addition).

Today had been a long, long day and I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey’s and have a cold one (A cold glass of milk, I’m sure—my addition). Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 16:55 (4:55pm. I hate military time!—my addition). Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day. Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime was as bad as ever—the heat and humidity at the same level—both too high.

I saw the car pull into the drive, ‘69 or ‘70 model Cadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail’s pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers—about four or five bunches as best I could tell.

I couldn’t help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: ‘She’s going to spend an hour, and for this old soldier, my hip hurts like (expletive deleted—my addition) and I’m ready to get out of here right now!’ But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.

Kevin would lock the ‘In’ gate and if I could hurry the old biddy along, we might make it to Smokey’s in time.

I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.

I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman’s squint.

‘Ma’am, may I assist you in any way?’

She took long enough to answer.

‘Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.’

‘My pleasure, ma’am.’ (Well, it wasn’t too much of a lie.)

She looked again. ‘Marine, where were you stationed?’

‘Vietnam, ma’am. Ground-pounder. ‘69 to ‘71.’

She looked at me closer. ‘Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I’ll be as quick as I can.’

I lied a little bigger: ‘No hurry, ma’am.’

She smiled and winked at me. ‘Son, I’m 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let’s get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name's Joanne Wieserman and I’ve a few Marines I’d like to see one more time.’ ‘Yes, ma’am. At your service.’

She headed for the World War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flower bunches out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn’t quite make out. The name on the marble was Donald S. Davidson, USMC: France 1918.

She turned away and made a straight line for the World War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name was Stephen X. Davidson, USMC, 1943.

She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone, Stanley J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.

She paused for a second and more tears flowed. ‘Two more, son, and we’ll be done’

I almost didn’t say anything, but, ‘Yes, ma’am. Take your time.’

She looked confused. ‘Where’s the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.’

I pointed with my chin. ‘That way, ma’am.’

‘Oh!’ she chuckled quietly. ‘Son, me and old age ain’t too friendly.’

She headed down the walk I’d pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch on Larry Wieserman, USMC, 1968, and the last on Darrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970. She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn’t make out and more tears flowed.

‘OK, son, I’m finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.’

Yes, ma’am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?’

She paused. ‘Yes, Donald Davidson was my father, Stephen was my uncle, Stanley was my husband, Larry and Darrel were our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.’

She stopped. Whether she had finished, or couldn’t finish, I don’t know. She made her way to her car, slowly and painfully. I waited for a polite distance to come between us and then double-timed it over to Kevin, waiting by the car.

‘Get to the ‘Out’ gate quick. I have something I’ve got to do.’

Kevin started to say something but saw the look I gave him. He broke the rules to get us there down the service road fast. We beat her. She hadn’t made it around the rotunda yet.

‘Kevin, stand at attention next to the gatepost. Follow my lead.’ I humped it across the drive to the other post.

When the Cadillac came puttering around from the hedges and began the short straight traverse to the gate, I called in my best gunny’s voice: ‘TehenHut! Present Haaaarms!

I have to hand it to Kevin; he never blinked an eye—full dress attention and a salute that would make his DI (Drill Instructor—my addition) proud. She drove through that gate with two old worn-out soldiers giving her a send-off she deserved, for service rendered to her country, and for knowing duty, honor and sacrifice far beyond the realm of most.

I am not sure, but I think I saw a salute returned from that Cadillac.

Instead of ‘The End,’ just think of ‘Taps.’

As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: ‘Lord, keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas. Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.’

Let’s all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy (Not in and of themselves. But, they helped and help!—my addition).

‘In God We Trust (Would that this is true! Particularly in the case of our present President!—my addition).’

‘If we ever forget that we’re one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under!’ (Statement by Ronald Reagan. Perhaps not original with him! That, I do not know! It certainly is not a statement from our present President!—my addition)

As I said, I received this yesterday from a friend. He is ex-military. This is a good time to post it—after Veterans’ Day and before Thanksgiving. Plus, he told me to post it now. Well, pass it on. I don’t do Facebook and such and I never send out mass e-mail from my e-mail address book. My way of passing something along is to post it on a blog.

I do not know if the account is true or not. Does not matter really. The point is the same. People, not just in the military, have sacrificed for the good of the nation as they saw fit.

President Obama’s cowardly deal with the Iranian regime—a regime dedicated to the destruction of Israel (Iran has stated as much many, many times!—my addition), pursuing nuclear weapons in violation of multiple United Nations resolutions, and the persecution of Christians (An evil Administration striking a deal with an evil Regime?—my addition) marks the most ignominious moment in western foreign policy in decades. The easy comparison is to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s appeasement of Hitler in Munich in 1938, when he signed [an agreement that—my addition] allowed Hitler to consolidate his gains in the Sudetenland on the bare promise of no further aggression in Europe.

There are indeed similarities. A war-weary west is being played by a terroristic and fascistic regime bent on regional domination. The deal buys time for further armament by the enemy regime, under the guise of international approval. The leader of the western bloc, President Obama, is being widely hailed as a master diplomat (By whom? The Iranians? The American mainstream media?—my addition).

But in truth, the west’s appeasement of Iran is significantly worse than its appeasement of Hitler in 1938, for a variety of reasons. First, as of 1938, Hitler had not yet made clear his plans to exterminate European Jewry. He was still attempting to ship European Jews out of Europe; the Final Solution was not formally adopted until 1941. Iran has made clear its desire to wipe Israel off the map (For many years!—my addition). Its current leader, supposed moderate Hassan Rouhani, has refused to acknowledge the Holocaust as historically accurate, participated in a rally calling for Israel’s destruction, and according to Iranian press reports, stated, ‘The Zionist regime is a wound that has sat on the body of the Muslim world for years and needs to be removed.’ Yet the Obama administration wants to pretend he is a moderate (Evil can not see evil in others!—my addition).

Second, in 1938, Great Britain was dealing from a position of military weakness. After World War I, the anti-war British public insisted on large-scale military cuts— cuts opposed by then out-of-government figure Winston Churchill— that crippled its military readiness. Chamberlain’s deal was not merely an attempt to buy off Hitler; it was an attempt to buy Britain time to re-arm. Today’s Iran deal is precisely the opposite: an American government wants to slash its military (Not only wants to, is doing so! Barack Hussein Obama wants to destroy the military as it was and create a much less powerful force. I have said so from day one of his Administration!—my addition), and wants to buy the Iranians time to secretly arm. America currently deals from a position of strength, and chooses weakness. Chamberlain dealt from a position of weakness, and wanted to give his own country time to build its strength.

Third, in 1938, the Munich agreement was supported by France, the nearest military ally the British had in the region (the Anglo-Polish military alliance was not consummated until after Hitler had violated the Munich agreement by annexing the rest of Czechoslovakia). Both Israel and Saudi Arabia are militantly opposed to the western sellout of its allies in the Middle East in favor of paper promises from a lying regime (As well they should be! Never trust habitual liars and that included our present President!—my addition).

Finally, Chamberlain’s foolishness was a combination of myopia and fear. President Obama’s foolishness is a combination of malice and egotism (Malice toward whom? Israel? America? Both?—my addition).

Desperate to misdirect from his failing signature program, Obamacare, and eager to earn his diplomatic laurels in his second term to placate his ego, President Obama’s Iran solution is just a convenient piece of a larger cowardly foreign policy. President Obama’s foreign policy over the last six months has ‘won’ America the diplomatic victory of leaving a weapons of mass destruction-using dictator in power in Syria while shifting Russia into the Middle Eastern driver’s seat and donating American stockpiles to al Qaeda. Obama has undercut the secular Egyptian military regime in favor of the fascistic Muslim Brotherhood. American power in the Middle East has been effectively minimized (By design?—my addition).

But most of all, he has successfully vented his anti-Israel malice. How else to read an administration that has repeatedly leaked Israeli national security secrets in order to stop an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities? How else to interpret an administration that has made it safer to be an anti-Israel dictator seeking nuclear weapons than a free and prosperous democracy? How else to understand an administration that insists that Israel apologize to Turkey for confronting a terrorist flotilla aimed at helping Hamas, insists that Israel building homes in its capital city of Jerusalem is more flammable than Iran building nuclear weapons, and suggests that the Israel-Palestinian issue lies at the heart of all Middle Eastern conflict (Israel is our closest, most dependable ally in the Middle East? And, we did what? Why?—my addition)?

Israel is on its own. Obama’s deal now makes clear that if Israel hits Iran, it does so at the risk of losing American support, even should Iran retaliate against Israel militarily. More than that, Obama’s deal makes clear that America will never take action against Iran under his administration, or greenlight action from others. After all, President Obama is not a man who declares that he has been duped. Just as in Syria, Obama will assume away any problems arising from his diplomatic blundering.

In 2012, Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel told Obama at the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., ‘How is it that the Holocaust’s No. 1 denier is still a president? He who threatens to use nuclear weapons—to use nuclear weapons—to destroy the Jewish state. We must know that when evil has power, it is almost too late … Mr. President, we are here in this place of memory. Israel cannot not remember. And because it remembers, it must be strong, just to defend its own survival and its own destiny.’ Obama nodded along. Clearly, those words didn’t penetrate (Nodding does not mean understanding or agreeing! Not with Barack Hussein Obama! Nodding means only nodding!—my addition). They didn’t penetrate because Obama did not care. He has his own agenda.

And that agenda is not anti-war. It is merely anti-Israel, and anti-American influence in the Middle East (Certainly both!—my addition). Unfortunately, that position makes war a near-inevitability.

Back in 1938, Winston Churchill, then relegated to the opposition in Parliament, lambasted Chamberlain for the Munich deal:

We are in the presence of a disaster of the first magnitude ... we have sustained a defeat without a war, the consequences of which will travel far with us along our road ... we have passed an awful milestone in our history, when the whole equilibrium of Europe has been deranged, and that the terrible words have for the time being been pronounced against the Western democracies: ‘Thou art weighed in the balance and found wanting.’ And do not suppose that this is the end. This is only the beginning of the reckoning.

On Saturday night, after the Iran deal had been announced, Secretary of State John Kerry said that opponents of the deal wanted war as a ‘first resort (Not true! No one in his right mind wants Barack Hussein Obama conducting a war!—my addition).’ That was yet another Obama administration lie. Opponents of the deal recognize what Churchill did in 1938: appeasement causes war. When war isn’t even a last resort—and who, at this point, takes Obama’s threats of war remotely seriously?—it is often the first result.

Wealth in the Senate: This is a couple of years old but it is the latest information I could fine with a quick search. Notice the top seven are all Democrats—the supposed Party of the poor and underprivileged! John Kerry is now Secretary of State. Herb Kohl is no longer in the Senate. Frank Lautenberg recently died, has been replaced, and his widow was given $174,000 by Congress using a provision in a law just passed. Of course, all seven, as Democrats, are pro-MURDER in their voting records although back home they may claim otherwise!

Update: The ban on the MURDER of unborn babies after 20 weeks in Albuquerque, New Mexico failed to pass Tuesday.

Positive News: The Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision decided to not block the new Texas law putting restricts on abortion clinics while the case is being appealed. This may be an indication of the Court vote when the case finally reaches the Supreme Court. Of course, constitutionally the case should have begun in the Supreme Court, in the first place.

‘Safer sex curriculum’ is a very inaccurate term for the salacious instructional fare promoted and taught by Planned Parenthood. A simple reading of the instructional materials shows that these programs are all about sexually stimulating even very young students—teaching them, in embarrassing graphic detail, and in mixed gender groups, the fun of sexual foreplay and sexual intercourse while attempting to persuade them to use condoms (The reason is simple! Planned MURDERHOOD is in the business of MURDERING babies. A significant number of those MURDERED babies are children whose mothers are young, unmarried, and involved in sexual relations with one or more males. If young, unmarried females are abstinent there will be no babies to MURDER. Thus, the young must be sexually active!—my addition)

One woman is standing up to fight Making Proud Choices!—one of the most graphic sexual foreplay curricula—and making a huge difference by doing so. Mary McLellan is fighting the implementation of this program in Charleston, South Carolina, middle schools and across the state (Notice that this is not in a liberal Blue, Democrat State. This is in the conservative South. Do not believe that your school is teaching conservative material just because it is in a conservative area or community!—my addition). She coined the astutely descriptive term ‘sexual foreplay curriculum’ after examining the content.

Making Proud Choices! successfully passed through the Charleston County School District’s Health Advisory Committee (HAC), then moved on to the CCSD Education Committee, comprised of four school board members.

‘I was the only person in the room that opposed Making Proud Choices!’ Mary reported.

‘Everyone else present were either supporters or CCSD personnel. Representation included the New Morning Foundation, Tell Them SC, ACLU (Anytime the American Civil Liberties Union is involved, you should be very concerned!—my addition), SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (exclusive trainers for Making Proud Choices!), Florence Crittendon, and MUSC Empower, the program seeking expedited approval so that they could get a federal grant to push safe sex onto our children.’

Mary brought the best evidence possible with her: the curriculum itself (That will do it!—my addition).

In her words, ‘I basically provided a reading lesson for the board members.’

McLellan instructed the education committee members: ‘Turn to page 86 and you will find a lesson on Condom Use Skills with a list of teacher supplies to include lubricated condoms, lubricants, and penis model(s). If this lesson is not depicting a sex act, then what is?’

She continued reading as the board members followed along.

The result was immediate. ‘One board member moved to table the curriculum until the Education Committee had time to review the content,’ McLellan stated. ‘The motion passed 4-0.’

She continued,

‘Making Proud Choices! resides in the CCSD Education Committee until it is brought forth again. This could be any day and without notice if Planned Parenthood has the influence in the district that I suspect.

Not bragging, but it only took one person (me) to stand up and read facts to get this nasty program tabled. Unlike the Health Advisory Committee, all four of the school board members were open to hearing facts and seeing the evidence for themselves and considering what is really best for the children of Charleston County (Because they are elected and from my history on a school board, most members want to do what is best for the students, the teachers, and the community!—my addition).’

You really should have been there. I hope you will be, next time.’

Mary is right. If you are in the Charleston County School District, you should have been there. According to McLellan, ‘Making Proud Choices! is already in Anderson 3, Barnwell/Blackville-Hilda, Dorchester 2, Richland County 1, and Spartanburg 3.’

McLellan warns parents that, unless they stand up and say NO to this curriculum, their children will be learning how to:


· make condoms fun and pleasurable,

· use condoms as a method of foreplay,

· act sexy/sensual when putting condoms on,

· hide [a] condom on your body and ask your partner to find it,

· tease each other sexually while putting on a condom,

· have fun putting one on your partner, while pretending you are different people or in different situations,

· feel more relaxed and really enjoy yourself, and

· use condoms to make erections last longer!

(Do you think there would be any teaching about the negative aspects of condom use? Such as the failure rate? In some religions it is forbidden?—my addition)

Mary was able to get the curriculum tabled in the schools expected to approve the program just by speaking up. If hundreds, or even dozens—or maybe even just a handful of parents—will speak up, the curriculum can be permanently removed, and the children of the district will be one step further removed from Planned Parenthood’s evil influence (NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, allow Planned MURDERHOOD and similar groups to get into your schools in any area! They should NEVER be involved in sex education. Their goal is to MURDER unborn babies! They are evil! And they are liars!—my addition).

From my experience on a school board, the only time a school board member will spend a lot of time on curriculum is when that was one of their campaign issues or a parent complained about the curriculum. In my four years on the board, I can only remember one time a parent complained about curriculum. That was in relation to a outside required reading in American government. Three of the five board members, at the time, were or had been American government teachers and we had all used the book. However, we did hear the complaint and we did seriously consider the complaint. It really is up to the parents to protect their children from harmful curriculum. Get involved, stay involved, and KNOW what your child is being taught! Do not rely on others! It may not happen!
