Common Core: Change the Name; Not the Game

Update: Heard on the 7PM ABC radio news the other day that according to a just released poll about 50% of those polled disapprove of how President Obama is handling the shut down. About 60% disapprove of Democrats handling and about 70% of the Republicans handling. Of course, they never give the questions asked so it is impossible to knew if the questions were slanted. Plus, I don’t trust anything that comes from the mainstream media when it come to polls or anything else for that matter.

That said, I’ve been hearing about the poll all day. The 7PM report was the first time they also said that “even conservative Republicans disapproved of the Republicans handling of it by a 59% margin.” And I immediately said, of course! And that is why the Republican figure is higher than the other two. As a conservative Republican, I do not like President Obama’s handling of it and of the Democrats handling of it. I also do not like the Republicans handling of it but for a very different reason. I don’t think they should have compromised down from defunding to delaying. Now, I’ll take delaying over funding. But, we should have stayed with defunding throughout. And that friends is why the Republican number is so high. Democrats don’t like the Republican position because they want funding. And conservative Republicans don’t like the Republican position because we want DEFUNDING! That said, I urge ALL Republicans to stand firm on delaying! Those who do not will be primaried!!! Competition is good for the economy and competition is good for the Republican Party!!! Competition keeps Congressmen committed to we the people!!!

‘Common Core State Standards’ might be the four most dreaded words in the English language for parents, teachers, and students right now. The botched education policy is infected by corruption and surrounded by controversy—and has been criticized across the nation since being implemented.

But Arizona’s public school superintendent, John Huppenthal, thinks he can fix it. Huppenthal made an official announcement last week stating that Common Core may get a name change in Arizona, where the standards could become known as the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards (A rose by any of name is still a rose. A terrible program by any other name is still a terrible program!—my addition). However, if he thinks that this simple act will actually work, he’s sorely mistaken (A name change does not change the program or its problems!—my addition).

You see, Huppenthal wants people to believe that ‘Arizona is declaring independence from the Common Core and from the federal government. We want to make it clear that Arizona has taken possession of the standards.’ Which is nice in theory, but there’s one little problem: Like many other states, Arizona received a Race to the Top grant. And in order for a state to be eligible for the grant funds, it has to adopt the Common Core State Standards (As the federal government normally does, it bribed the States to adopt the program!—my addition).

According to the Arizona Department of Education website, the state received a $25 million grant and allocated $3 million of it to implementing the Common Core math and English standards. $25 million is a lot of money, and it undoubtedly came with some strings attached (after all, the money came from the government). Huppenthal can claim that the state has cut those strings, but how often does the government give away that kind of money without getting something in return?

Huppenthal says that Arizona wants independence from Common Core, but truthfully he doesn’t seem to have an issue with the policy itself. In fact, the superintendent made it clear that the state doesn’t intend to change anything about the standards other than the name. Arizona schools will adhere to the same rules, meet the same requirements, give the same standardized test and even follow the same lesson plans (And he is a Republican! Is he a closet RINO?—my addition).

In reality, Huppenthal just wants to recondition people to accept the standards. He knows that parents and teachers are angered every time they hear ‘Common Core,’ so the easiest way to fix that is to change the name. It’s really just an attempt to silence critics by duping them into believing that Arizona has pulled from Common Core (Actually, it is a demonstration that he thinks the people are gullible! This is a practice of the Left! Change the name; not the game!—my addition).

But let’s face it: A simple name change doesn’t cure Common Core of its ailments. It really doesn’t matter what Arizona calls the standards because they’re still bad education policy. If Arizona really wants to declare independence from Common Core and the federal government, they’ll start by scrapping the standards and giving back the grant money. It’s not likely to happen though, is it (My use of red. Money draws people to that which they otherwise would not do!—my addition)?

The Obama Administration is spending money to block access to the World War II Memorial, using veterans as pawns as he works to save the abortion-pill mandate.

The World War II Memorial is open-air and open 24 hours a day, but the Obama Administration brought in forklifts, barricades, and security to shut it down.

President Obama would rather block World War II vets from their memorial than delay his individual mandate for even one year or give up on his abortion-pill mandate.
