The American Academy of Pediatrics Once Again Recommends that School Districts Start the School Day Later in the Day

Please pray for Dr. Kent Brantly and all those involved with the Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Praise the LORD! Dr. Brantly was released from the hospital on 8/21/14!

According to Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Brantly did what a medical missionary would do, he praised GOD!

Yet, ABC radio, which is my news source, edited out ALL references to GOD in it news broadcasts!

“Let Them Sleep: AAP (American Academy of Pediatricsmy addition) Recommends Delaying Start Times of Middle and High Schools to Combat Teen Sleep Deprivation
8/25/2014

For Release: August 25, 2014

Studies show that adolescents who don’t get enough sleep (Define enough sleep!my addition) often suffer physical and mental health problems, an increased risk of automobile accidents and a decline in academic performance (And what percent of the teen population is that?my addition). But getting enough sleep each night can be hard for teens whose natural sleep cycles make it difficult for them to fall asleep before 11 p.m. (What? How do they know that? Do all teens have the samenatural sleep cycle?”and who face a first-period class at 7:30 a.m. or earlier the next day (What percent of schools start school at 7:30 a.m. or earlier?my addition).

In a new policy statement published online August 25, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends middle and high schools delay the start of class to 8:30 a.m. or later (It may be new for this year, but it is not new! This organization has been harping on this for some years!my addition). Doing so will align school schedules to the biological sleep rhythms of adolescents, whose sleep-wake cycles begin to shift up to two hours later at the start of puberty (Support the statement! For every teenager? I just heard this on the radio today. Adults are suppose to get 9 hours a sleep a day. Are they serious? I dont think Ive ever had nine hours a sleep in a day. Last night I went to bed at about 12:30am. From my post at http://christiangunslinger.blogspot.com: “posted by Christian Gunslinger at 12:07 AMI got out of bed at 4:45am. I normally sleep between 5-6 hours per night. Almost never do I hit 8 hours! Question: How did all those teenagers for years and years manage to get up before the sun to work on the family farm? Were they all sleep deprived? Did they all go to sleep about 11pm?my addition).

‘Chronic sleep loss in children and adolescents is one of the most commonand easily fixablepublic health issues in the U.S. today,’ said pediatrician Judith Owens, MD, FAAP (Prove it!my addition), lead author of the policy statement, ‘
School Start Times for Adolescents,’ published in the September 2014 issue of Pediatrics.

‘The research is clear that adolescents who get enough sleep have a reduced risk of being overweight or suffering depression, are less likely to be involved in automobile accidents, and have better grades, higher standardized test scores and an overall better quality of life,’ Dr. Owens said. ‘Studies have shown that delaying early school start times is one key factor that can help adolescents get the sleep they need to grow and learn (Like the fraudulent man-made global warming studies?my addition).’

Many studies have documented that the average adolescent in the U.S. is chronically sleep-deprived and pathologically sleepy (Seriously? And that is all going to be solved by moving the start of school back? What if teens go to bed later knowing that school starts later? What is going to prevent them from doing that? my addition). A National Sleep Foundation poll found 59 percent of 6th through 8th graders and 87 percent of high school students in the U.S. were getting less than the recommended 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep on school nights (Maybe the recommended number of hours of sleep is WRONG!my addition).

The policy statement is accompanied by a technical report, ‘Insufficient Sleep in Adolescents and Young Adults: An Update on Causes and Consequences,’ also published online August 25. The technical report updates a prior report on excessive sleepiness among adolescents that was published in 2005 (When they recommended the same old material!my addition).

The reasons for teens’ lack of sleep are complex, and include homework, extracurricular activities, after-school jobs and use of technology that can keep them up late on week nights (How will changing the start of school change any of these factors?my addition). The AAP recommends pediatricians counsel teens and parents about healthy sleep habits, including enforcing a media curfew (Good luck!my addition). The AAP also advises health care professionals to educate parents, educators, athletic coaches and other stakeholders about the biological and environmental factors that contribute to insufficient sleep.

But the evidence strongly suggests that a too-early start to the school day is a critical contributor to chronic sleep deprivation among American adolescents. An estimated 40 percent of high schools in the U.S. currently have a start time before 8 a.m.; only 15 percent start at 8:30 a.m. or later (Why is that?my addition). The median middle school start time is 8 a.m., and more than 20 percent of middle schools start at 7:45 a.m. or earlier.

Napping, extending sleep on weekends, and caffeine consumption can temporarily counteract sleepiness, but they do not restore optimal alertness and are not a substitute for regular, sufficient sleep, according to the AAP.

The AAP urges middle and high schools to aim for start times that allow students to receive 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night (How do the schools control WHEN a student goes to sleep at night?my addition). In most cases, this will mean a school start time of 8:30 a.m. or later, though schools should also consider average commuting times and other local factors.

‘The AAP is making a definitive and powerful statement about the importance of sleep to the health, safety, performance and well-being of our nation's youth (Says who? Says the AAP!my addition),’ Dr. Owens said. “By advocating for later school start times for middle and high school students, the AAP is both promoting the compelling scientific evidence that supports school start time delay as an important public health measure, and providing support and encouragement to those school districts around the country contemplating that change.”

Ive got a suggestion for the AAP. If they really want a change in time and think it is that important, then have their members run for local school boards, win elections, convince the other members of the board, and change the time in that school district! The school boards make school board policy. NOT the AAP! By the way, making this recommendation on August 25 is rather meaningless for this school year! The start times have longer since been determined!

Galatians 6: 7-9 (NIV)

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER! In the end, VICTORY belongs to GOD and HIS people! HIS people are, by definition, CHRISTIANS! Followers of JESUS, the CHRIST!
