Today is International Left Handers Day. I didn’t know about it until I heard it on the radio news. My mother, who was born in 1919 and is still alive, was born left handed. When she started school, she was forced to use her right hand. Thereafter, she could use both hands but naturally used her left. I was born left handed I use my left hand overwhelmingly. I would have real problems if I lost the use of my left hand. The advantage, with a family of six children and two parents, I got sit at the end of the table next to dad who was at the head of the table on his right. Sitting there, I didn’t bump elbows and arms with all the right handed people at the table. Another advantage, as a left handed batter, I was a step closer to first than right handed batters. However, the world is designed for right handers! Anyway, here is some information about left handers for those of you who spend your time being a righty (Spellcheck does not accept righty as a word but it does for lefty. Now, does that seem fair?).

A Special Day
· Among all this domination by the right-handers of the world, there is a special day for left-handers called the International Left-handers Day.
· The 13th of August each year is designated as International Left-handers day.
· On this day, left-handers of the world get together as one to celebrate their difference and address their situation and the difficulties which they face (I did not know this— my addition).
· International Left-handers Day was first celebrated in 1976, by its founder, Dean R Campbell whose birthday also happens to be on this day.
How International Lefthanders Day is Celebrated
· Today International Left-handers Day is celebrated all over the world. It is marked with gatherings of left-handed people.
· Several activities are organized on this day, featuring left-handed people.
· The day is abundant with left-handed gadgets, books and tools. There are presentations by left-handers about left-handers.
· The difficulties of left-handers are highlighted and left-handed people come forward and share their experiences and also tell people how they overcome the problems of being a left-hander.
Why International Lefthanders Day is Celebrated
· The main objective of International Left-handers Day is to create awareness about lefthanders. It is interesting to note how many world-famous left-handers we have. Just to name a few Presidents; Gerald Ford, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton and, yes, even Barack Obama.
· Other famous left-handed people include Prince Charles, H. G. Wells, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Michelangelo, Amitabh Bachchan, Charlie Chaplin, Tom Cruise, Alan Border and John McEnroe. The actual list of famous lefthanders would however fill several pages.
Conclusion
Therefore, it is important for everyone to realize that being left-handed is not a handicap. Children should not be discouraged from being a left-hander, as they may have even more difficulty coping with their right hands if they are after all, naturally left-handed. It is this day, the International Left-handers Day which brings all left-handers into the limelight, in an effort for the right-handed world to understand left-handers in a better light, and having done so, to support their situation to make their survival an easier task (Makes it sound like we are victims. Not so!—my addition).

May have been more than that if some early Presidents were forced to use their right hand as my mother was. Even so, even though we make up about 10% of the population, given the above Presidents, over 18% of the Presidents have been left handed. I do apologize for the last two Presidents. They, in my opinion, are not representative of left handers!
